Two friends of mine from Carlisle, one of whom works for the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, decided to do as the government instructed - and enjoy the countryside. They took a bus from Carlisle to Keswick, and walked round Derwentwater. The trip has been described and photographed -see

walking options

Like Julian Thurgood's friends, we found no shortage of things to do. During the last week in Keswick, had some memorable and scenic roadwalks; particularly around Derwentwater (via Swinside Inn) and to Braithwaite (via Royal Oak). As regular visitors it was so sad to see the impact of the crisis on local businesses; I feel that many more regular visitors could demonstrate their loyalty by continuing to come. Perhaps a 'friends of Keswick' thread would be useful.

Friends of Keswick

Mark

I believe that just by taking part in this small forum people are showing themselves to be 'Friends of Keswick'.

This Easter weekend there were a lot of people in Keswick and the North Lakes. I'm sure that many of them had come to the area for the first time. There was plenty for them to do. The town centre was certainly packed on Saturday afternoon, and there were walkers and cyclists enjoying the roads rather than struggling up the fellsides!

Julian's friends obviously had a good time on one of our most scenic walks - one which can be enjoyed at any time. I am adding a link to the page describing their walk to the front page of KeswickPlus.

I agree that it would be good to be able to exchange views with other lovers of the Lake district. I come to Keswick from the midlands at least 4 times a year, in fact I was in Keswick last week. What lovely weather but such a shame that you have not got the hill footpaths open yet.
