Bassenthwaite Lake is very different in character from the other lakes. Bass Lake is a National Nature Reserve and SSSI. There are no motor boats here, and the Southern part of the Lake is a World renown site for water fowl, and otters may be seen playing and fishing.

Ospreys have been nesting close to the lake since 2001, and may be seen flying over or catching fish, usually beween the beginning of April and the end of August.
